They can all purchase new skills in between missions as well, for new attacks, combos, and passive abilities. All characters have a basic combo and juggle attack they can use to control enemies, as well as an evasive ability they can use to avoid danger. Each character has a radically different play style, but the underlying systems in the game give them all a basic level of familiarity.Īll characters have a melee attack and a ranged attack. These characters are series veteran Dante, rookie demon-hunter Nero from DMC4, and the minion-summoning enigma called V. During various missions throughout the game's story, you switch to different characters to see what they're doing at the time. You can play as one of three characters during the adventure. It's a testament to how well-thought-out the game is that the systems work as well as they do, especially considering how much is crammed into DMC5. The DMC2 references are a slight spoiler, but fans will be pleased to see how it is implemented in the story and gameplay. DMC5 takes gameplay systems from virtually all games in the series, including Devil May Cry 2 and DmC: Devil May Cry-both considered black sheep in the franchise. Your job is to kill demons, yes, but DMC wants you to do it with style and swagger, not efficiency. The dynamic rating system keeps track of how aggressively you fight, as well as how effectively you vary your attacks so as not to get too monotonous. Fans need not worry, though: Devil May Cry 5 is a fully realized game unlike the fun (but messy) hodgepodge that was Devil May Cry 4 ($22.49 at Green Man Gaming) (Opens in a new window). The result is highly satisfying action and nostalgic story closure. Without revealing any story details, the scenario in Devil May Cry 5 feels as well developed as the story in DMC3 and even emulates some of the beats and structure of that game. Devil May Cry 3 in particular also expanded Dante's backstory and developed him as a character, resulting in perhaps the strongest story in the series thus far. This is certainly true for DMC, but the series has utilized an over-the-top style of storytelling, similar to Bayonetta ($19.99 at Humble Bundle) (Opens in a new window), to keep players engaged during cutscenes. Generally, the story in action games serves as a basic frame to hang the gameplay onto. The combined efforts of Dante, Nero, Trish, and Lady aren't enough to stop the demon, and in a humiliating turn of events, Nero and the mysterious protagonist V are forced to make their escape and leave everyone else behind. At the heart of this tree is Urizen, the self-proclaimed king of hell, who is feeding off the tree's roots as he waits for the fruit to ripen. This demon tree is gorging itself on human blood in order to bear a fruit that can give any demon that eats it enough power to rule hell. The game is set in Red Grave City, a generic American town in which a massive demon tree has taken root. The $59.99 DMC5 starts in media res, where every major hero in the series gets molly-whopped by the demon king Urizen. Action game fans, be they fans of the series or not, should give it a spin: Devil May Cry 5 is a fantastic PC game. However, the flaws are minor compared with what the game has to offer. There are a few hiccups here and there: I found newcomer V to be somewhat clunky to use, and the demon tree environment is used a touch too liberally for my liking. The visuals, despite being overly realistic compared with the more anime-esque designs in earlier games, are astoundingly detailed and beautiful to look at in action. All systems have been rebalanced and streamlined, making them easy to grasp yet challenging to apply in practice and to master. It takes elements from previous games, even including the fan-derided DmC: Devil May Cry reboot, and introduces all-new characters and gameplay systems for fans and newcomers to enjoy.
